Seminars
Stellan Vinthagen August 21st, 2007
University of Gothenburg Resistance Seminars
Since September 2007 the Resistance Studies Network is having seminars which brings up various aspects of “resistance studies”. The Seminar is the main meeting point for researchers, students and activists interested in critical resistance studies. All seminars are open for interested participants.
Since 2012 the seminar program is published on Facebook in the group “Resistance Studies Seminars”. If you become a member in the group you will get the info to your Facebook account. If you are not on Facebook, send us an email and you will get the info before the seminars: write “stellan.vinthagen” and connect that with @ and add “resistancestudies.org” (the email address is a normal one but written like this in order to avoid the spam machines …).
From 2013 and onwards we have one seminar series that is built on introducing lectures, and one built on academic texts. If you are interested in the text-based one (organized by our Resistance Studies Group at School of Global Studies), let me know. Thanks.
Stellan Vinthagen

OLD SEMINAR PROGRAMS
The program for the first part of 2011 (the Eight Season) is now published, see below!
At Thursday’s at 15.15-17.00 (at odd weeks) at the Annedalsseminariet, Seminariegatan 1A, close to Linneplatsen (see description how to find at www.globalstudies.gu.se). For more information, and previous seminars, see below. The room number is normally SA403 but may vary for different seminars (see below).
Normally there is a paper accessible on this site (see below) one week before each seminar.
Observe that some seminars are in English and others in Swedish (see in the Schedule below) depending on the language of the presented paper or preferred language of the seminar presenter.
After the seminar there is a post-seminar gathering at restaurant Gyllene Prag (Sveag. 25) from 17:00 and onwards. We eat, drink and continue the discussions from the seminar in a more informal way. You are welcome to attend even if you was not at the seminar!
Before the seminar we sometimes have a working group meeting of the network (14:00-15:00) in the same room. If you want to attend, you have to email in advance to be sure of when and where we meet: type “stellan.vinthagen” and then add “@resistancestudies.org” to a complete email address, and tell that you are coming. Anyone who wants to contribute to the development of the network is welcome. Then we discuss research projects, articles, development of the website, conferences, etc. Since the network is not having any funding for administration all activities depends on the voluntary contribution of members of the network. Come with your ideas and discuss with others how to develop the network!
If you have more proposals of seminar themes or persons (especially for the next semester but also for the coming months), you are welcome to propose them by sending an email to the new organizer of the seminar: Per Ström. If you want to propose possible people don’t hesitate to contact Per. There are maybe guest lecturers traveling by Gothenburg anyhow and who we should include in the activities of the network, or other people working in the area with issues of interest for resistance studies.
Welcome to a new semester of Resistance Studies!!
New Seminar Coordinator (from Jan 2010): Per Ström, (contact through writing “per.strom” and then add “@yahoo.se”). Per is the one to contact with all questions regarding the seminars. Per works in collaboration with Stellan Vinthagen, responsible contact person for RSN at School of Global Studies.

January 7 with Cathrin Wasshede, doctoral student since spring 2002. Department of Sociology, Gothenburg University. Seminar is in Swedish. January 7 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 403. For those who want to familiarize themselves with Cathrin Wasshedes research we recommend this paper: Den Gode, den Onde, den Normale: MotstÃ¥nd och ambivalens – unga aktivistmän i närkamp med heterosexualitet (Download directly by clicking on the link)

February 4 with Jonas Olsson, psychologist. On psychology and resistance: This seminar explores some of the connections between psychology and resistance. Psychological research on activism – varieties, results, possible implications. Also discusses the idea of viewing some forms of psychopathology as resistance, drawing mainly on Foucault and narrative psychology. Seminar is in Swedish. February 4 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 403.
Â
Â
February 18 with Hinda Talal, activist in the peace movement. To exist is to resist – Non-violent resistance in Occupied Palestinian Territories: Non-violence in Palestine is not an unknown form of resistance. The first Intifada, also known as the uprising in 1987, was principally non-violent. The Palestinian resistance during the first Intifada took various forms and shapes as the people opted for civil disobedience, strikes, boycotts and refusal to pay taxes. A cultural manifestation of the Intifada grew quickly and graffiti as well as Hip-hop increased in popularity. However, as the second Intifada became a de facto reality in 2000, non-violent resistance in Palestine has not been the focal point in the media. When Hamas gained the majority in the Palestinian legislative election in 2006; media and politicians questioned whether the resistance in Palestine was primarily non-violent or whether these elections pointed towards a shift in the Palestinian resistance. This seminar will focus on my journey to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian territories, where I met with organisations, civilians and politicians, who all play vital roles in the Palestinian resistance. Is there any noteworthy and apparent non-violent resistance? If so, what is the impact of the non-violent resistance on its own people, the political fractions, Israel as well as the international view on Palestine? Is the non-violent resistance contributing to social and political change across the affected parties? If so, what lies ahead for such resistance in Palestine? Seminar is in Swedish. February 18 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 403.Â
NEW!
March 4 – Christopher Kullenberg, doctoral student Department of Philosophy. Becoming political online Christopher Kullenberg will present some general ideas about an emerging field of internet politics, where he explores the possibilities of online activism, hacker epistemology and technological change driven by communities rather than states or corporations. Also, a conceptual framework will be elaborated for thinking and acting as an internaut, and how to intervene in internet politics as a mode of existence which is prior to the conventional way of thinking politics as goal oriented, signifying and legislative. Seminar is in Swedish. March 4 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 403.Â
Â
Â
March 18 with Åsa Rosenberg, doctoral student since spring 2007 at the Department of Sociology, Gothenburg University. Identity play or propaganda?: Feminist politics in Second Life. The internet is increasingly recognized as not just an inherently social but also political arena. Some parts of the internet (like Google or Facebook) have a largely mainstream character, but many people also choose to organize themselves in opposition to what they perceive to be traditional norms of western society. The virtual world Second Life hosts a variety of such ideologically motivated subcultures. The purpose of this project is to investigate the practice and meaning of two such civic engagements, patriarchical Gorean role play and feminist activism, and the tension between them. Seminar is in English. March 18 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 403.

Â
April 15 with Dennis Beach, professor of pedagogy at the University of BorÃ¥s. Sweden’s school system and neoliberalism: Sweden’s school system has taken a strong neo-liberal turn over the past 15 years through decentralisation policies and management technologies that emphasise the individual over the collective and market choices over bureaucratic control. Systems of school choice, individual freedom and performativity now prevail. This presentation draws on over 10 years of ethnographic fieldwork that has examined various aspects of this turn. It looks at data relating specifically to two sets of pupils. These have been identified and coded through the research as pupils who are either particularly successful in school or particularly unsuccessful. One thing that is considered specifically is how pupils are described and positioned by teachers in relation to their schooling and another is how these pupils also describe and position themselves. Questions relating to education democracy and participation in Swedish schools are also considered however and there is an attempt to make a class connection to the outcomes that are described. The suggestion is that neo-liberal educational policies have increased education inequality in both theory and practice. For the rest of the seminars we will be at room 419! Seminar is in Swedish. April 15 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 419.

Â
April 29 with Fanny Ambjörnsson, researcher and teacher at the Center for Gender Studies, Stockholm University. Seminar is in Swedish. April 29 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 419.
Â
May 12 with Andrés Brink Pinto, PhD graduated and author. Seminar is in Swedish. May 13 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 419.
Â
NEW!
May 27 with Johan Söderberg, doctoral student Section for Science and Technology Studies. Seminar is in Swedish. May 27 Thursday 15:15-17.00 at the Annedalseminariet at Room 419.

8 Oct Edmé Domingues, PhD, Associate Professor, Latin American Studies, School of Global Studies, Gothenburg University. On Maquiladoras and workers resistance: The Movie Maquilapolis: Maquilapolis is a film realized by women workers from maquiladoras in the border town of Tijuana, Mexico. It is a documentary where these women tell us their life stories, their work experience in these foreign owned assembly factories where neither worker rights nor respect for ecology are taken into account. But it is not only a denouncing document it is also an account of their struggles, of their resistance to this kind of jobs and life and of their dreams of change. (Seminar is in English) Room 403.
(Seminar is in Swedish) Rum 403.

With examples from several faith traditions such as Hindu, Christian, Native American and Pagan, primarily in Swedish and American settings. The Seminar text is possible to download here. (Seminar is in English) Room 403.

Psychological research on activism – varieties, results, possible implications. The seminar discusses histories of resistance and the right to land from the cases of indigenous minorities and maroon communities in Brazil. Although these two groups in many cases may be hard to distinguish from one another on the field, different legislations apply. While maroon rights are based on the constructing of genealogies of resistance, indigenous rights are tied to notions of ethnic authenticity. Lorenzoni will present ongoing research on the relation between (sometimes self)ascribed identities, the law and the precarious legitimacy of the State. (See http://hum.gu.se/institutioner/idehistoria-och-vetenskapsteori/personal/andra/patricia). ROOM 407.

The text by Stellan Vinthagen and Mona Lilja on “Resistance” in Anderson, Gary L. & Kathryn G. Herr (2007) Encyklopedia of Activism and Social Justice, Sage: California, p. 1215-1217, will be discussed. But the discussion will not only be on the text but mainly on the difficult task of defining “resistance” (and its different forms/expressions/aspects…).
- 11/10 “Critical Resistance” (Text by David Hoy), Room 129, Annedalsseminariet. This seminar is a continuation of the last two in the sense that we try to make one more attempt to understand what “resistance” is before moving into the texts which deals with forms/aspects of resistance. The text is the Introduction to the acclaimed book “Critical Resistance: From Poststructuralism to Post-Critique” by “A leading authority of Continental philosophy” David Couzens Hoy, professor in Philosophy at University of California, Santa Cruz. We have also included (for those of you who wants more to read…) two reviews of the book (Review 1, Review 2). Mona Lilja will lead the seminar. (Mathias Klang could not make it to this seminar and will present his text during next semester in 2008).
- 25/10 “Abstract Hacktivism and Resistance” (Dr Karl PalmÃ¥s), Room 204, Annedalsseminariet. Dr Karl PalmÃ¥s from the Department of Economics (Handels) at Gothenburg University, will present a very interesting reflection on contemporary resistance, built on his (and Otto von Busch) book “Abstract hacktivism†(download book here). The seminar will focus on how “hacktivism” can be understood as a form of reconstruction, reuse and manipulation of computors/machines/systems, and as such a kind of (re)constructive resistance (More info on the book you will find in the blog-entry by Stellan Vinthagen, dated 19th of Oct). Welcome!
- 8/11 â€Resistance in the digital age†(Swedish text can be downloaded here) ( Christopher Kullenberg), Room 325, Annedalsseminariet. This seminar will focus on the question concerning the conditions for resistance in the digital era of information technologies and surveillance. The seminar will discuss the shift from disciplinary societies to societies of control, and explore the relationships between power and resistance.
- 22/11 Nonviolent Revolutions ( Jörgen Johansen), Room 325, Annedalsseminariet. During recent years, mainly from the 1980s, we have seen a growing and impressive trend of “nonviolent revolutions”, revolutions in which non-armed popular movements make authoritarian regimes fall through major demonstrations, strikes, occupations and wide non-cooperation. Jörgen Johansen has studied this phenomenon in detail, published widely on the subject and visited as well as cooperated with several of these revolutionary organizers. The paper for the seminar mainly focus on describing the cases which, from the Iranian revolution 1979 up to the present struggle in e.g. Burma, makes up the empirical foundation for the much needed “theory of nonviolent revolutions”. During the seminar Johansen will give some of the elements of such a theory, a theory which doesn’t exist yet.
- 6/12 â€Understanding Resistance” About definitions, typologies and a “genealogy” of resistance†& The History of Nonviolent action (SV), Room 325, Annedalsseminariet. The seminar text is written by Stellan Vinthagen and deals with definitions of resistance, different typologies, a genealogy of resistance and illustrate that kind of historical analysis by a look on nonviolent action, and is possible to download here Understanding Resistance
- 20/12 “The ethics of resistance ” ( Bengt Brülde), Room 325, Annedalsseminariet. Ass. Prof. Bengt Brülde discusses the possibilities and difficulties of making an ethical justification of resistance. The paper for the seminar introduces the discussion.
